As a pillar industry in Zibo city – situated in East China's Shandong province – the construction industry has ranked among the top five in the region for five consecutive years, increasingly becoming the backbone of the city's economic and social development.
Despite the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the annual output value of Zibo's construction industry surged to 112.9 billion yuan ($17.20 billion) in 2021, a year-on-year growth of 10 percent – ranking it fifth in the province – and it reached 12.7 billion yuan in the first quarter of the current year, increasing 9.3 percent year-on-year.
At present, more than 240,000 people in Zibo work in the construction industry, of whom more than 85 percent are migrant workers, their presence promoting the transfer of rural labor.
The number of construction enterprises in Zibo is estimated to have reached 1,818. More than 140 of them have an annual output value of over 100 million yuan.

In recent years, Zibo has introduced effective policies to galvanize the construction industry and encourage its companies to head out and sell their products and services in markets outside the city.
As a result, hundreds of its enterprises contracted projects in 11 other provinces in 2021, with the output value exceeding 20.2 billion yuan, an increase of 14 percent over the previous year.
When it comes to industry quantity and quality awards, Zibo's construction companies have figured among the top in prefecture-level cities in China. Awards they took home in 2021 included four Luban awards – a prestigious prize for construction projects of China – in one fell swoop, as well as four National Quality Engineering Awards and other leading prizes.
