Chionanthus retusus flowers enchant in Zibo city

The flowers of the Chionanthus retusus trees – a species also known as the the Chinese fringetree – began to blossom in late April in Zibo city in East China's Shandong province, to the delight of both locals and tourists.

They've attracted hordes of visitors who come to take in the pure white, fragrant flowers, which will decorate the green branches for nearly three weeks.

There's a garden with more than 100 Chionanthus retusus trees in Zhengjiazhuang village in Zibo's Boshan district. According to the village elders, the oldest Chionanthus retusus tree there is more than 200 years old.

In Tuquan village in Zichuan district, there's a Chionanthus retusus tree that is reckoned to be over 1,000 years old. It is said that the tree was planted by the emperor of ancient Qi state in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) and the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).
