Zibo – in East China's Shandong province – is pushing hard for a low-carbon future and last year it supported plans for the allocation of 64,000 tons of clean coal for civil use, exceeding the target.

That's according to remarks made by officials at the municipal energy business development center, who on May 19 gave its overall assessment of the situation.

The "report card" reflects the transformation path of Zibo from a high-carbon energy structure to a clean and efficient low-carbon one.

According to the center, Zibo has identified three areas for further improvement: ensuring energy security, serving the green and low-carbon development of energy and facilitating the rise of the energy industry.

Since 2021, the city has successively issued several plans for green energy development, carbon reduction and the large-scale development of solar power.

As a result, a number of new energy projects are bearing fruit, such as one for a proton exchange membrane – a key technology for hydrogen celled vehicles being developed by Zibo-based Dongyue Group.

Officials from the center said this year Zibo will support plans for the additional allocation of 50,000 tons of civil clean energy coal, actively assist in the construction of major oil and gas pipeline projects, help to ensure the supply of oil and gas energy and streamline the supply of coal, natural gas and other energy.

In addition, the city is seeking out alternative energy, with solar power Zibo's favored choice.

A number of big solar power projects have landed, including the first major-capacity solar power park linked to the grid in Shandong province and the first 10 kilovolt photovoltaic power generation project in Zibo.

As a clean energy source from the sun's rays, solar power is widely said to be characterized by variable reliability. In order to cope with the problem of guaranteed power during less optimal weather, Zibo is also vigorously developing energy storage.

The largest energy storage project – Energy Storage Valley in Zibo – has been completed. It will develop core industrial clusters for clean energy, power batteries and energy storage power stations, as well as construct a demonstration area for China's energy storage industry.
