As a heavy industry city relying on its considerable resources, Zibo city – in East China's Shandong province – is ramping up efforts to develop the hydrogen energy and fuel cell industry and transform its overall energy structure.

In a milestone for the development of the city's hydrogen industry, 50 hydrogen cell refrigerated vehicles made in Zibo started operating at the local on July 8.

The occasion effectively demonstrated that the city has successfully established a complete hydrogen cell industry supply chain covering the areas of fuel cell membranes, reactors, engines and whole vehicles.

The proton membrane from Dongyue Group, the engine from Beijing SinoHytec Co Ltd and the vehicle manufacturing from Suntae Automobile Co Ltd have underscored the city's competitive advantages in the hydrogen energy sector.

The vehicle adopts the proton exchange membrane independently developed and produced by Dongyue Group, which is the first of its kind to use domestic proton exchange membranes for commercial operations in China.

Zibo is rich in hydrogen resources, with an annual output of 480,000 metric tons of hydrogen, 88,000 tons of which are surplus and can be supplied to areas outside the city.

The city is working on integrating hydrogen energy into all aspects of its economic development. It has built six hydrogen refueling stations, established 11 hydrogen-fueled bus routes with 100 buses and the number will be increased to 300 this year.
