The Department of Science & Technology of Shandong Province announced on Feb 18 that over 40 new achievements made by high-tech companies in Shandong – located in East China – were applied at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which drew to a close in the national capital two days later.
One of the companies, Hangrun (Shandong) New Material Co Ltd, won an order last October to produce more than 3,000 sets of special antibacterial and antiviral PTFE membrane composite materials, for sportswear to be used by Olympic athletes, a spokesman said.
The membrane material, developed by the company in collaboration with Jinan University and Shandong University of Technology, has more than one billion micropores per square centimeter on its surface, allowing water vapor to pass through while water droplets cannot.
The material was previously mostly used in military clothing and tents, but the standard was improved for the athletes at the Games. It not only has excellent windproof qualities and had waterproof and moistureproof properties, but can also effectively filter bacteria and has good general protective functionality.
