Wuyin Opera is a traditional folk opera with a history of more than 200 years. It is popular in the cities of Zibo and Jinan, and neighboring areas in central Shandong province. The opera is a combination of yangko (a popular rural folk dance), a five person group and Wuyin Opera.

The opera can be presented in the form of two categories, erxiao and sanxiaoErxiao has two characters, xiaodan (young girl) and xiaosheng (young man). Sanxiao is performed with three roles, xiaodan, xiaosheng and xiaochou (comic role).

Wuyin opera reflects upon the lives of rural women and uses many folk expressions and common imagery. It is a popular opera among the masses. Wuyin Opera has produced many famous actors, such as Wang Xunxing, Sheng Caoran, Gao Guifang and Li Dexing. Among them, the most famous is Deng Hongshan.

Wuyin Opera originates from the common people and is an indispensable part of traditional festivals, wedding ceremonies and other celebration activities. However, changes in society, the economy and culture have greatly impacted the opera, which is in danger of dying out.

It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage on May 20, 2006.
