Liaozhai City – located in Zibo city in East China's Shandong province – is one of the five major tourist attractions in Shandong.
Its name Liaozhai originated from Liaozhai Zhiyi or Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio – an 18th-century classic collection of short stories written by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) writer Pu Songling.
As the former residence of Pu, it has taken the stories of Liaozhai Zhiyi as the theme of the garden. Walking through it, visitors can experience the bizarre world depicted in Pu's novel.
It is a large garden scenic spot with six sections – an Art Exhibition Hall, the Huxian Garden, Shiyin Garden, Liaozhai Palace, the Manjing Temple and Guanhu Garden.
It covers an area of 1,000 mu (66.7 hectares) and cost 160 million yuan ($24.29 million) to establish.
